a Child
Although all children in Kenya are entitled to eight years of state funded primary education, there is no provision for their education beyond the primary stage. Schools for Kenya work with the Kelimu Trust who identify talented and deserving children who would otherwise drop out of the system and raises money to provide them with four years of secondary education. This money is provided by individual sponsors who, at the present rate of exchange, commit to paying approximately £300 (sterling) per year for four years to fund one child through secondary school. Sponsors are kept informed with the progress of their pupil through school reports and a letter of thanks from the child they sponsor.

What Does Your Sponsorship Pay For? Three hundred pounds per year pays for a child's travel, education, uniform, boarding and food for a year. Unbelievable that so small an amount pays for so much, but many Kenyan children come from extremely poor families and even this is beyond their means. Without the opportunity to progress their education beyond the primary phase, many children will have diminished chances of a better future. With a good secondary education behind them, children have more chance to have a career and earn a living for themselves and their familiies. Others might go on to college or university.
